Lake Murray Members Start The 2023 Boating
Season
By Filling Its Activity and Cruising Calendar
With planning concluded in January, members of
America's Boating Club of Lake Murray got busy enjoying each other's company at
a variety of land-based and on-the-water activities. To get things rolling, over
50 members enjoyed the 2nd Annual Commander’s Bowling Invitational hosted by Lt
KT Tripathi on 4 February. Some enjoyed it so much that they have continued to
bowl weekly.
Next it was Super Bowl weekend and celebrated
with a Soup-er Bowl event at Flotilla Island on 11 February where 57 members
enjoyed 26 delicious soups! In addition, two boxes of canned goods were
collected to donate to the We Care organization! Congratulations to new member
Tyler Williams for his prize-winning Cheeseburger Soup, with kudos to Cara &
Edie for taking second and third places in the soup contest! And thanks to First
Lady Natalie Barnhill who hosted the evening’s NFL trivia competition.
On 2-5 March, P/Lt/C Wayne Cromley coordinated
the 2nd Annual Camping and Boating Breakout Weekend at Dreher Shoals State where
about 20 members basked in the warmth of campfires as they shared fellowship. It
wasn’t the best of weather — gale force winds forced postponement of Friday’s
potluck dinner to Saturday. But the wind nor low water prevented our members
from getting together to start the boating season in this unique fashion — they
reserved camp sites 45-63, with others choosing to rent park cabins while our
boaters anchored in the adjacent cove.
Another large crowd gathered on 1 April for
our Annual Oyster Roast where 100 members feasted on oysters and shrimp prepared
by P/C Lee Ayers. The weather was beautiful and the seafood was spectacular.
Shake ‘N Break was held 22 April with 104
members participating, including America’s Boating Channel guests Marty and Sari
Lafferty. As a thank you to our membership, Bridge officers cooked and served
hamburgers and hot dogs following the morning's nautical yard sale. Certified
ABC Lake Murray members conducted Vessel Safety Checks throughout the day. Lt/C
Mike Charles presided over the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony before everyone
ventured out on the water for a cruise and afternoon raft up. After the crowd
departed, several volunteers worked with Marty Lafferty who began recording
video for portions of Season Seven of America's Boating Channel. ABC Lake Murray
members will appear four videos that will air this summer on YouTube and
America's Boating Channel smart TV app on Roku and FireTV.
As if there weren't enough spring activities,
on 28 April Lt KT Tripathi hosted a different kind of gathering at Anchor Lanes
in Irmo. Instead of bowling, Twenty-three members gathered for the Commander's
Golf Tourney -- a fun-filled evening of indoor simulated golf. Another
successful event that may be repeated given the excitement generated by those
participating.
Our Third Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration,
which was a big hit with 85 members and their families attending, was on 6 May.
In addition to the wonderful food provided by Moe’s and the decadent desserts
donated by members including a delicious red velvet cake to celebrate Lt/C Joe
Firimonte’s birthday, we raised $1,010 in a silent auction to benefit our
Thornwell Children’s Home Day on the Lake, scheduled for July 22. Thanks to
First Lady Natalie for securing 14 spectacular gift baskets from local
businesses. In addition to the gift baskets, Champion donated a $3,500 door with
an optional glass insert to be auctioned off to benefit Thornwell Day. Be sure
to bid on the door at upcoming events. The minimum bid is $1,250, which includes
free installation.
On May 19-21, ABC Lake Murray hosted the D/26
Spring Cruise and Rendezvous. With the help of members who volunteered time and
boats to clean, decorate, welcome, cook, entertain and cruise more than 90
visitors to Flotilla Island, Cdr Tim and First Lady Natalie Barnhill hosted a
very successful weekend. It was truly a team effort and the photos show the fun
that was had by all.
