Causeway to Flotilla Island
Reopens After Repair
On 2 March, LMPS was notified that Dominion Energy had completed
the necessary repairs to the causeway to Flotilla Island, allowing America's
Boating Club of Lake Murray to reopen the driveway/causeway to its facility for
normal operation. The
causeway to Flotilla Island was closed to vehicle traffic following discovering
of an an erosion issue during a meeting of the Boating Activities Committee on 8
January 2022. P/C Ed Garbe, Lake Murray's liaison with Dominion Energy, said the
company may make some additional repairs/enhancements next winter when the water
levels are lower.
Commander Mike Urquhart thanked Dominion Energy for handling the
repairs, which will allow our organization to continue its mission of promoting
boating safety through education. "This is great news for our LMPS members,
members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary who share use of our facility, and for
our first responders who use our island during emergency rescue efforts," he
added.
Cdr Urquhart
offered "special thanks to P/C Garbe, Tim Austin, Lt/C Tim Barnhill, P/C Rick
Agar, P/C Mike Kirk, Lt Gene Butler and others for the work that took place to
get us to where we are today.... and just in time for one of our most popular
events." He announced that in addition to the causeway reopening, Harbor Master
Gene Butler had de-winterized the building and docks.
