LMPS Hosts Open House May 21
to Celebrate National Safe Boating Week
As part of National Safe Boating week, America’s Boating Club – Lake Murray
Power Squadron will host an Open House from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, May
21, 2022 at its facility on Flotilla Island, located at 2390 Johnson Marina
Road, which is at the end of Johnson Marina Road between Chapin and Ballentine.
Stop by to learn about our organization. Our three-part mission includes the
promotion of boating safety through education, civic service, and the enjoyment
of boating (power and sail) activities and social functions among our
membership. We seek to Learn, Engage and Connect.
During our Open House,
there will be an educational display of the many classes
and seminars available to the public -- from America's Boating Course that provides students with all the
information required by federal and state boating laws and regulations to
Navigation. There is even a Weather course or you may be interested in online
seminars such as How To Use GPS or how to choose and use a VHF radio for your
boat.
For those who attend the Open House by boat, request a free Vessel Safety
Check by one of our certified inspectors -- find out what you might be missing
before getting stopped by officers with the S.C. Department of National
Resources (SCDNR). And, you can learn about our other civic activities that
include maintaining Lake Murray's system of reference lights and day markers --
check out the Lake Murray map that shows the lake's system of reference lights
with their proper location and flashing sequence. We also check and report the
status of the lake's 300 hazard buoys maintained by SCDNR.
Did
you know Lake Murray Power Squadron was selected by the non-profit Sea Tow
Foundation in 2016 to host a Life Jacket Loaner
Stand. If you need to borrow a life jacket, we're here for you. We just ask you
to email us at
LifeJackets@lmpsonline.org when
borrowing a life jacket. Sizes are available for adults (standard and extra
large), youth, children and infants.
In
addition to our volunteer and civic efforts, we love to boat -- whether on Lake
Murray, the Congaree River, or the Intercoastal Waterway; you name it and we'll
tow there for a boat outing. And, we love to get together with our boating
friends to eat a few oysters or sit around a bonfire. So, come on out and meet
us on Saturday,
May
21 and help us kick off National Safe Boating Week!
