For the past 11 years, members of the
Lake Murray Power Squadron have come together as a team to host the
children living at Thornwell Home for Children for a fun day on Lake
Murray. Thornwell is a home for abused, abandoned and neglected
children in Clinton.
This year's Fun Day on the Lake was held
24 July 2021. As COVID-19 continued to impact life, the event was
half the usual size with 34 Thornwell residents arriving at Flotilla Island.
Although there were fewer children, we still
had 28 members bring out six boats and water toys to help entertain
them. With so many volunteers, the children were soon
fitted with life jackets and had plenty of assistance in kayaking, swimming,
boating, and tubing as lifeguards looked on, ready to assist if needed.
While many volunteers spent the day
outside with the children, there were a few members inside preparing
and setting
up for lunch consisting of grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, all the
fixings, chips, lemonade and tons of cookies. The children took time
out to eat, but as soon as the last bite of food was swallowed, they
were right back outside to enjoy the water.
Be sure to contact LMPS member Wayne
Cromley to volunteer to help with this event next year! It is a
truly rewarding endeavor. |
